I can confirm now, that having the intel video driver locked to version 2.18.0 indeed solves the problem (with any kernel, tried 3.4.2, 3.4.4 and no problems at all). Version 2.19.0 appears to be the culprit as far as I see.

Accordingly I have built [1] an xf86-video-intel package with this upstream patch applied and could submit it to X11:XOrg if you think this is accetable.
