The entire shell disappears and if there were applications running, they would appear without the window-titlebars. The only way forward is to kill the xserver by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Backspace twice, killing every running application and leading to loss of unsaved data. I attach the .xsession-errors(.old) file after a recent such occurrence.
