No crontab files may be links, or linked to by any other file. No crontab files may be executable, or be writable by any user other than their owner. But if /etc/crontab has these permissions: -r--r--r-- 1 root root cron complains /usr/sbin/cron[3664]: (*system*) BAD FILE MODE (/etc/crontab) this goes away if the file is writeable by root.
