Yes, precisely this setting is enabled. The corresponding maximum file size in
this tab is appropriate (much larger than the pdfs, about 5MB), and changing
the option "Use embedded thumbnails" does not affect the problem.
Also, I am convinced that dolphin is actively trying to get the thumbnail: gs
becomes active shortly after navigating to a pdf directory, and
xsession-errors shows the message (among others, see attachment above):
dolphin(10961)/kio (KIOJob) KIO::SlaveInterface::dispatch: error 104 "Cannot
create thumbnail for /home/testo2/a.pdf"
gs/gv/ghostview alone can display the pdfs without problems, however with the
following console output:
Warning: translation table syntax error: Unknown keysym name: apLineDel
Warning: ... found while parsing '<Key>apLineDel: GV_Page(page+5)
'
Warning: String to TranslationTable conversion encountered errors
*** Warning: GenericResourceDir doesn't point to a valid resource directory.
the -sGenericResourceDir=... option can be used to set this.
Also, gnome file manager has no problems with the thumbnails (which are
presumably also generated using gs).
Therefore, in my opinion something seems wrong in the communication between
kio_thumbnail and gs -- possibly something broke during update from 11.2.
However, I am currently stuck on where to look next for the problem. I would be
grateful for any ideas where to look in order to trace the problem (relevant
log files/related packages to reinstall/relevant system-wide config files/...).
