[Bug 643219] New: Dolphin / kio_thumnail fails to create ps / pdf thumbnails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643219 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643219#c0 Summary: Dolphin / kio_thumnail fails to create ps / pdf thumbnails Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: michael_denker@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=392614) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=392614) xsession-errors User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 SUSE/3.6.10-0.3.1 Firefox/3.6.10 I noticed that dolphin (and konqueror) does not generate pdf/ps previews. Previews are enabled, in particular for pdf/ps files, and the maximum file size is set to 5MB, much larger than any of the files I have. Happens to a directory full of hundreds of pdfs from different sources, so it is unlikely that the pdfs are the problem. Nautilus has no problems with the thumbnails, neither has okular, gv or acroread a problem displaying the files. Other linux distributions (e.g. openSUSE 11.2) had no problem with these pdfs. Same happens for a newly created user with a fresh home directory - no dolphin thumbs of pdfs/ps. Other thumbs work great. System was updated via DVD from openSUSE 11.2. Reinstalled ghostscript, both 8.70.14.1 and the update 15.1, neither works. Deleting /etc/ghostscript does not help. Using top, I can see gs being active very briefly after navigating to a new pdf directory in dolphin. However, no thumbnail emerges. With debugging turned on in kdebugdialog, attached is a list of errors in xsession-errors that seem related to this bug in creating a thumb for 'a.pdf'. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start dolphin 2. Navigate to directory with pdfs, with "Preview" on. Actual Results: No pdf/ps previews are displayed in dolphin. Expected Results: pdf/ps previews are displayed in dolphin. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Update:
A simple updgrade to 11.4 RC1 resolved the issue. pdf/ps thumbnails appear again in dolphin without further steps needed.
I assume this means the bug can be marked fixed (despite its persistence in 11.3)?
No, please. This is still _unsolved_ as long as this bug persists. I have 5 machines with 11.3 and the thumbs for ps / pdf don't show. Upgrading to the 11.4 release is not a must (I will in the future), as long as the machine are working fine. Can I help to debug this by sending some data? I'm willing to help, but not so skilled in kde development. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From comment #3, "gsthumbnail" was the main suspicious faulty file. This
