It seems to me that there are very many redundant ones, justified only by the fact that someone felt like using something different. ( Take mingetty, I think mgetty could have been used just as well probably ) My idea would be to create some kind of minimalistic pattern for a first install, with the option of selecting more if necessary. So you just get up and running and then download everything you want or deem necessary from the online repositories.
