[Bug 269774] New: clean up packages for initial installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 Summary: clean up packages for initial installation Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: casualprogrammer@yahoo.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Not sure whether I am the only one to suffer from installing useless stuff over and over again. I may delete these packages over and over again, they keep creeping in on me and clutter my disk. A small selection ( by no means complete ) of stuff absolutely not required, but constantly forced on me. atmel-firmware ( Not very useful on Intel chips ) gnopernicus ( I am not visually impaired and hope to stay that way ) initviocons ( I don't have an IBM iSeries ) smartlink-softmodem ( It doesn't work with my chipset ) tpctl ( I don't have a Lenovo ThinkPad ) x11-input-wacom-tools ( I don't have a tablet ) jarnal ( how many notetaking applets do we really need, tomboy comes preinstalled ) xournal ( see jarnal ) ipw3945 ( Only helpful on my Amilo, still gets pressed on my Sony as well ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So, atmel-firmware, ipw3945 are removed. I just fixed initviocons to make it powerpc only. tpctl should come in via libzypp magic -> removed. I filed a bug for x11-input-wacom-tools. Let me think about the rest a bit... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #4 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-04-28 12:26 MST ------- I have jfstools, definitely useless for me. lirc, most notebooks don't have IR connections any more. lukemftp, not sure why this should be there. mailx ??? mingetty ??? ( try to remove it, wow! ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #5 from aj@novell.com 2007-05-02 00:15 MST ------- You need mingetty for the text console. Unless you do a really minimal install, there will be always packages that you don't want. I've removed jfsutils now but I think the others might have to stay since there's no better solution right now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #6 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-02 04:30 MST ------- Yes, I found that mingetty is needed as my terminals were gone :-( I am not sure about the packages all together, I am just suggesting. It seems to me that there are very many redundant ones, justified only by the fact that someone felt like using something different. ( Take mingetty, I think mgetty could have been used just as well probably ) My idea would be to create some kind of minimalistic pattern for a first install, with the option of selecting more if necessary. So you just get up and running and then download everything you want or deem necessary from the online repositories. Fedora 7 test3 does a pretty good job here, although it has quite some disadvantages (for my tastes) over openSuSE 10.3 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #7 from aj@novell.com 2007-05-02 05:06 MST ------- Reread the opensuse-factory mailing list discussion about minimal pattern. A minimal pattern exists - it's the text install. That one is really the minimal one and not usefull on its own, you need to add other stuff. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #8 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-02 16:26 MST ------- I found some discussion at: http://lists.opensuse.org/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=minimal+pattern&go.x=7&go.y=8&go=Los&list=opensuse-factory Doesn't seem to be very productive though, also textinstall seems to have it's own problems. I'll give it a try though next "clean" install. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

lirc, most notebooks don't have IR connections any more.
My brand-new thinkpad has IR on it. (In reply to comment #6)
someone felt like using something different. ( Take mingetty, I think mgetty could have been used just as well probably )
mingetty is far smaller than mgetty since it only works on virtual terminals. By forcing mgetty, you're asking for a _larger_ application. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #10 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-10 08:02 MST ------- Thanks for the info, as I said I don't see this dogmatic. One could imagine though, that, during installation, presence of IR is tested and package selection takes place based on the result. BTW Fedora 7 does a system check on installation and asks you whether you are willing to supply the result to their database for fine tuning of HW support. This couldn't hurt openSuSE either. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269774 ------- Comment #11 from casualprogrammer@yahoo.com 2007-05-28 08:04 MST ------- One thing to be added is a bittorrent client, as far as I can see none is installed by default. I should think azureus would be preferrable over BitTorrent and BitTorrent-gtk, although it's not currently an openSuSE item. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
