One of the complaints I can understand and support is the fact that installed packages also appear in the list of available packages, which is kind of confusing. The one list approach seem to be in broader use, hence I think more people will feel much faster at home if there is just one list (e.g. Synaptic, sw_single-qt, Smart, Fedora's Pirut, Ubuntu's app-install, ...). Granted, both Synaptic and sw_single-qt can be considered expert front ends. That's because the functionality is instantly visible. The gtk interface to sw_single might offer the same functionality but it is very often hidden (And there lies the problem: the functions are not visible enough -- bad for experts -- but there is still too much functionality and information to consider this tool to be simple). In the long term we should make sw_single the expert tool, with a similar interface in both qt and gtk (better in terms of documentation). Maybe some tweaks might be nice (use buttons instead of drop-down list for the views, like Synaptic does). For the other side of the user spectrum we should design a totally different tool specific to their needs (maybe hiding packages at all, as most desktop users just care about applications and not packages). Suggestion: * Discuss these design issues now, maybe on the yast-devel list. Come up with a feasable solution for 10.3 and a plan for beyond, taking user feedback of 10.3 into account. * Open a new bug for 10.3 plans. Try to close it in time. * Open a bug for post 10.3 plans and refer to it when complaints arrive (aka. we are aware of this and are working on it) * Mark this bug a duplicate of the post-10.3 bug We should address this, as it seems to be only complain, I keep hearing about yast-gtk. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
