Thanks - I did need the kernel-devel package in order to build the fglrx
driver.
Anyhow, I've installed the updated kernel, rebooted, logged on into KDE and
kicked off a script that duplicates the 11.3 DVD iso image using cp in a for
loop. Beagle is also running (and trying to reindex something in my home
folder). Result - UI definitely feels more responsive than with the stock 11.3
kernel. No mouse freezes, I can drag windows around the screen with no repaint
delays, cp's CPU usage is only around 10-12%.
Also tried watching a video - no freezes (as described in #7) either.
Looks like something changed for the better.
