I suggested to use datadir configuration in /etc/my.cnf
/etc/sysconfig/mysql is used only to distinguish how the daemon should be
started. Configuration of database/databses is stored in /etc/my.cnf
But I understand that the presence of /etc/sysconfig/mysql can be a little bit
confusing. On the other hand adding datadir as an option to existing sysconfig
would be much more confusing in case of several databases running. Moving
/etc/my.cnf to /etc/sysconfig/mysql will confuse users from other
distributions/OS and this sysconfig would be different then the rest so it will
be more likely even more confusing.
You should be able to use autoyast even if datadir has to be specified in
/etc/my.cnf for example using following:
