Since I was not able to reproduce my observations, I think one can close this
bug.
In my oppinion, the observed behavior is due to an undefined state that arises
when firefox is updated when it is still running. Each time this happens (and
I can reproduce that), I am no longer able to shut down the old version after
the update was carried out. In that situation firefox does no longer respond
to Ctrl+Q or to the File -> Quit menu entry and I must kill the process.
Hence, ideally, zypper should provide a facility to exclude/skip certain
updates (in analogy to the --skip-interactive option).
