There are NO usb disks/drives attached. For no apparent reason, the hard disk will go crazy and the system will become totally unresponsive. It will in effect grind to a halt. Desktop interaction is no longer possible. Even the clock in the system tray will freeze. The freeze can continue for 30-40 minutes(!), while the hard disk keeps rattling like a maniac. After that the PC will become alive again. After which the whole circus goes again. This can happen multiple times per day. Platform: - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz - Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EP45-DS5/EP45-DS5, BIOS F11 09/10/2008 - nVidia GTX 260 (using nVidia driver) - 1 x SAMSUNG_HD204UI - 2 x SAMSUNG_HD753LJ - kernel: Linux version 3.1.10-1.13-desktop (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.6.2 (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 12 13:11:31 UTC 2012 (44a489e) - distro: openSUSE 12.1, fresh install - All nepo/strigi stuff disabled - X composite disabled Observations: 1: Remote login through ssh will time out. 2: top will sometimes list various processes running at 99%. Sometimes time top lists processes at idle 3: iotop will show 0% swap, minor disk io and 100% io 4: Adding transparent_hugepage=never to kernel ops, has solved the problem.
