[Bug 769614] New: Harddisk goes crazy and system grinds to a halt
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769614 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=769614#c0 Summary: Harddisk goes crazy and system grinds to a halt Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: koos2012@pohw.nl QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1 [May be related to [1] https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=719416] The difference between my problem and [1] is that copying files to USB is not involved. There are NO usb disks/drives attached. For no apparent reason, the hard disk will go crazy and the system will become totally unresponsive. It will in effect grind to a halt. Desktop interaction is no longer possible. Even the clock in the system tray will freeze. The freeze can continue for 30-40 minutes(!), while the hard disk keeps rattling like a maniac. After that the PC will become alive again. After which the whole circus goes again. This can happen multiple times per day. About swap: I have a 4GB ram machine not doing much.

From a kernel perspective, this looks like a plain OOM and it's effectively filesystem trashing that you're seeing as opposed to the usual swap thrashing

Hi,
I have a pretty similar set-up to Koos Pol, and I'm facing constantly the same problem:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz - 4 GB ram - Linux 3.1.10-1.16-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jun 27 05:21:40 UTC 2012 (d016078) x86 - Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1 - KDE
The same problem happens in another PC running OpenSuse 12.1-64bit wit "Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU D510 @ 1.66GHz"
I think I can help a bit on this discussion. This problem usually happens to me when I try to watch a video from the following website:
I tried watching videsos from the same site. The plugin-container appears to leak slowly but it was not excessive and did not cause any swapping. Can you also check if knotify4 is using an excessive amount of memory like it was for Koos Pol? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
