I replaced 11.0 with 10.3 yesterday and completed the updates today. As far as
I can tell, the sound system was working reliably on the 10.3 distribution
image that I installed. Yesterday, everything ran quite well, including
"startup" and "shutdown" sounds.
Today, after a complete set of updates, the sound settings became like 11.0.
The "Volume Applet" was losing its setting between reboots. However, if I had
the sound set up, the shutdown sound would play.
After setting up the "Sound Preferences" from "Autodetect" to "ALSA", the
applet comes up properly and even the "startup" sound seems to play reliably.
So part of what has gone wrong happened back during the upgrades to 10.3, only
now it appears to be even worse.
I am closing this bug under 11.0 because I am no longer running 11.0.
If I can leave a final suggestion, I think it would be a good idea to focus on
getting the "startup" and "shutdown" sounds to play. They are not inherently
important, but the problems are probably somewhere in the X boot and shutdown
processes, and this makes a good debugging starting point.
Then again, I expect you guys are already well into getting at these bugs in
your own way. . . .
Good luck!
