https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244605 Summary: Fix dual boot - important feature hidden by too many levels Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: arahne@arahne.si QAContact: qa@suse.de Industry reality requests that most Linux computers works as dual boot. On most new computers, SUSE is unable to resize NTFS partition, it says it needs to be checked, even if it was shutdown properly. So we need to delete Windows, install SUSE, make FAT32 partition during SUSE installation, and then install Windows. Windows of course wipes MBR with its own loader, so we need to restore dual boot. This is currenty possible, but is very complicated. So if we compare the probablity of having bad RAM, or have to restore MBR, you will agree that it is much more likely that we need ot restore MBR. RESTORE DUAL BOOT should be available as one of the boot options from the installation DVD. If the computer would only have one Linux installed, then RESTORE DUAL BOOT would look into linux partition, read grup or lilo settings, and rewrite it to MBR, without any confusing questions. If you would have several versions of Linux installed, it should ask from which partition to load the boot options, and then restore that. This would be a big plus for some customers who need to resinstall the windows, and then find themselves unable to boot into Linux again. Going halfway through the installation and then hit some hidden "other" button to enter repair mode, and more questions later, or even boot installed system, go in yast, system, bootloader, change timeout (also well hidden) and write to disk - this is all much too complicated. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
