Two points:
- This all worked with the 12.2 edition, with no particular effort on my part
- It's unlikely to be a connectivity problem, since
a) I can access the printer itself with a browser using its IP address
b) the printer setup software (both Yast2 and CUPS vi port 631) could
determine the URI of the printer over the network
I've deleted the printer setup and recreated it several times. I installed a
32 bit edition of 13.1 over the existing 64 bit edition, and tried again.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS was able to setup the printer correctly and print, with CUPS
1.5.3. I'm pretty sure that my Suse 12.2 has CUPS 1.5.1, but I'll check.
It's also been suggested to use a different protocol to connect. I'll first
try the one Ubuntu selected - it wasn't lpd:
