Chiming in. We currently boot fatclients with AoE and have the same issue.
What about the network connection? Is it possible that the network connection
gets disconnected, causing the block devices to hang?
In the meantime, I've rewritten the shutdown script to work similar to LTSP.
(For some background, LTSP requires a user to logout of the terminal server,
and then when 'Shutdown/Reboot button is clicked on the login screen, it sends
the kernel halt/reboot command)
The script replaces /sbin/shutdown and saves the users gnome-session
(gnome-session-save --logout) and then sends the kernel command to halt or
reboot the computer.
Since the main image is RO, I don't see any harm being done as long as we can
log the user out successfully.
It'd be cool to be able to fully shutdown, but I think its unnecessary for
images. We just need to make sure the user is logged out and that NFS and any
other filesystems (USB disks, on board HDDs, etc) get unmounted correctly.
