Yes, although I'm somewhat handicapped by not having a current OpenSUSE
installed myself.

Thanks for the diagnostics. Please try this:
Make sure that sbp2 is not present:
# modprobe -r sbp2
# lsmod | grep sbp2
Now load sbp2 with a workaround enabled (12 seconds pause between login and
SCSI inquiry):
# modprobe sbp2 workarounds=16
# cat /sys/module/sbp2/parameters/workarounds
Then switch the disk on and check the dmesg output.
Furthermore, is there a difference between using the power switch on the
enclosure vs. pulling out/ plug back in the power chord?
