This is no bug.
In contrast to HP all-in-one devices which are supported
by the free HPLIP software which we provide in openSUSE,
Brother's MFC devices are not supported by free software
but by Brother's third-party proprietary driver software, see
http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=brother
so that there cannot be "out-of-the-box" support
for Brother's MFC devices.
Therefore you must go to Brother and ask them,
if anything goes wrong with their driver.
The scanner models which are shown by YaST, see
/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/create_scanner_database
are those which are listed in the model description
files in SANE: /usr/share/sane/descriptions/
and additionally
/usr/share/sane/descriptions-external/epkowa.desc
and
/usr/share/sane/descriptions-external/hpaio.desc
the latter two because we provide the external drivers
epkowa and hpaio "out-of-the-box".
For future openSUSE versions (i.e. after openSUSE 11.1)
I will think about how YaST could show even models which
are known by SANE but for which we do not provide drivers
in particular
/usr/share/sane/descriptions-external/brother.desc
and
/usr/share/sane/descriptions-external/brother2.desc
