Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mvdv@spamcop.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- After installing Brother's scanner driver I have been unable to configure the scanner via: YaST>Scanner>Add Specifically. Only 4 Brother scanners show up! Of course I also banged my head for a couple of days, before tracking down Bug #442173 :( Anyway, it appears that support for Brother's MFC printers can be added that is similar to support for HP's all-in-one? Specifically, similar support to that added in response to Bug #310476 (enhancement request) In addition it would be very useful to support Brother's send-keys utility which enables - 'scan-to-image' - 'scan-to-file' - 'scan-to-email' - 'scan-to-ftp' Configuring, or instructions to configure, the send-keys file: - add facility to define the eth device to the send-keys configuration file. - add facility to define the eth device to the send-keys script files. - add init.d script for brscan-skey Brother has very good install/configuration instructions: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html I followed these instructions, then installed and tested printer and scanner devices using CUPS. Next, you have to start the sane-port service via YaST>Network Services>Network Services(xinetd) In addition, for my model (brother2 driver), I had to do: sed -e 's/#brother2/brother2/;s/#net/net/'
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
Other possible drivers are 'brother' and 'brother3'. Then, YaST>Scanner shows the Brother scanner device which I had previously registered by following Brother's instructions. The 'brother2 at' network entry is also shown. See attached image. Next, YaST>Hardware>Scanner>Edit wait, wait, wait... (Bug #442173 means an approx 20 minute wait here) Then all that shows is the "Scanner Model and Driver Selection" dialog, and it seems one can _never_ get to edit any of the discovered brother scanners! Now, select driver "dev0,Brother,MFC8860DN" Yast>Scanner>Other>Test Failed. Next Select driver "brother2" Yast>Scanner>Other>Test Failed. However the following all work: scanimage -d "brother2:net1;dev0" -v >/dev/null scanimage -d "net:192.168.1.1:brother2:net1;dev0" -v >/dev/null scanimage -d "net:localhost:brother2:net1;dev0" -v >/dev/null This enhancement would expand openSUSE scanner support 'out-of-the-box' by many 10's to 100 of Brother models :) Let me know if you want me to help test any changes.
