[opensuse-artwork] 12.3 (and beyond) To-Do list (was Re: Regular Meetings Proposal)
Hi All, I was debating posting on the thread about regular meetings - Marcus and Bryen have successfully conveyed my feelings on the topic, but I do accept there is one thing that could be improved upon to help people contribute. So in the spirit of my other recent mailings, here is what I consider needs to be done before 12.3 is ready, with loose priorities to explain the importance of each task, and then a few other action items which I know the community has discussed. Some of these tasks may already be in progress by others, but regardless, if you feel you can do something, do it. If you do it best, it'll end up in the distribution, if you don't, you'll end up learning from the process, and that's even better! Enough talk, we've only got a few weeks before 12.3 needs to be out of the door and right now we are way behind. Where possible, I'll be including the links to the appropriate place for the work to be committed to. Good luck, and thank you! High Priority - The following tasks are essential and must be completed as soon as possible for 12.3 to be a successful release 1. Plymouth Branding - We've talked about ideas for this for 6 months, we no longer have time for further discussion, someone needs to put something together and get it into factory - and hopefully with enough time that we can perfect it afterwards https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/plymouth 1a. Do we still need splashed branded for people who might not be using plymouth? if so, this needs to be done too! https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/splashy 2. Grub2 branding - the rough edges in the Grub2 branding in 12.2 really earned the artwork team black marks in the eyes of many of our users, and with the exception of me, I don't think anyone on this list looked at the problem - and I was unable to resolve it without a fundamental rebranding which I considered too dramatic for a maintenance release. So lets avoid that and get Grub2 branded and in factory *now* so if similar problems appear again we can get them fixed before release this time https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/grub2 3. KDM/simpledm (KDE login screen) - Given the question about which will be the default DM/login screen for KDE, we need to make sure both KDM and simpledm are branded properly. Not getting KDM 'right' was one of our harshest complaints in 12.2, lets get that fixed - https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/kdm 4. ksplash - Still 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/ksplash-qml 4. YaST branding - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/yast 5. SUSEgreeter - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated. (Might be derived from something else as I see it in my working folder but not in github) 6. xfce splash - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated, or treated the same way as the application splash screens below. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/xfce 7. Application splash screens - gimp ,libreoffice, etc - the team decided that we'd no longer be branding these packages, but no one has done the following work required to make this a viable option 7a. Altering of the relevant package dependancies in OBS and/or the openSUSE default installation patterns in https://github.com/openSUSE/patterns to make sure the -opensuse branding packages are not installed for relevant applications 7b. If we're not going to keep -opensuse branding as an option then removal of the gimp parts of the opensuse-Branding package and the build process in https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and removal of the libreoffice-opensuse branding package from Factory 8. GNOME Wallpaper changing throughout the day - If we're going to use this nice GNOME feature, someone needs to make the variations for morning/night (or other time periods if they want to get really creative) and they need to be put in the appropriate place in https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/gnome and the xml files edited as required. Alternatively 8a. Removal of the variable GNOME wallpaper from https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and appropriate changes made to the openSUSE-branding packages so GNOME has the same static default wallpaper as KDE Medium Priority - Less important, but still needs to be looked at 1. Improvements to the grow design https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3 2. Tweaking of everything accomplished already and everything above once it's done to make this version of openSUSE as pretty as possible https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3 3. GDM - GNOME 3's GDM is pretty much taken care of (by me) and is currently just a simple white logo ontop of the default grey+noise wallpaper every other GNOME 3 installation has - I think it actually works pretty well with our current draft of grow, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon if people come up with ideas. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=gdm-branding-openSUSE&project=openSUSE%3AFactory 4. Packaging of alternative/additional wallpapers/designs and submission to openSUSE Factory. http://build.opensuse.org 5. Testing and contributing to Michaels awesome adwaitia green theme for gnome 3 and tweaking any branding to better match http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-gnome/2012-12/msg00044.html https://github.com/Catanzaro/gnome-themes-suse/ Low Priority - Probably too late to do for 12.3 but if we want it for 12.4 people probably need to start work on it now 1. If people really want to use Raster artwork as an option for core design artwork, an alternative branding makefile script to at least replicate the current functionality of the branding makefile script here will need to be made https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile 2. Alternatively, improvements to the https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile script to automate as much of the above outstanding work as possible would probably be a damn good thing to have done too.. it's not glamorous work, but anything to significantly reduce the amount of work to get the distro out the door would be great.

You mentioned a few reasons why I am not that big fan of IRC meetings at all.
As Bryen lined out earlier, they might be good for on-demand topics, like: 'There is version 12.3 knocking on the door, and a few tasks left, lets talk about who will do what.'
This team is a bit special, as when it's about work, noone is there. (you have read Richards comments on that) Ppl tend to talk a lot in advance and afterwards, but noone likes to do the work. Another special thing is noone remembers on what we have decided afterwards, even if it's in the logs.
In the past (till now), there are some guys left like Ivan, tigerfoot, Richard, Victor and me who did most of the work, even if we asked for help several times (see the ML archive on that)..
As a result we have been called elitists. Thanks, but we would have prefered if PUTYOURNAMEINHERE would have helped to do the ugly work instead.
And don't expect that beginners contributions will be treated the same as from established ones. You, DuBois are a good example to show how to do it right. You are interested and asking for help.
Another way to go is to continuously contribute and improve, like Victor does.
Anyhow, this issue has been addressed to the Board, with no real consequences.
So my friendly (and not elitist) advice for anyone who is not already doing the real stuff: ask, learn, contribute, improve.
If one is asking for help in a friendly manner and not even pissing the established members off for all the work we have done, we can work it out together in the future.

Richard, I have little time to help nowaday, but I read all the mails and I want to say that your post is extremely important. It's very near to an universal artwork permanent workflow (what needs to be done for each distro) ande I don't remember having seen one so acurate, thanks a lot. We desperately need such clear and complete workflow to make people aware of the distro work and so attract new members for the team. again great thanks (I have to confess I was pretty discouraged by some sort of bad feeling on this list these days) and happy new year, sur it will be happy with such a good start! jdd -- http://www.dodin.org http://jddtube.dodin.org/20120616-52-highway_v1115 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

High Priority - The following tasks are essential and must be completed as soon as possible for 12.3 to be a successful release
1. Do we still need splashed branded for people who might not be using plymouth? if so, this needs to be done too! https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/splashy
2. So lets avoid that and get Grub2 branded and in factory *now* so if similar problems appear again we can get them fixed before release this time https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/grub2
3. KDM/simpledm (KDE login screen) - Given the question about which will be the default DM/login screen for KDE, we need to make sure both KDM and simpledm are branded properly. Not getting KDM 'right' was one of our harshest complaints in 12.2, lets get that fixed - https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/kdm
4. ksplash - Still 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/ksplash-qml
4. YaST branding - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/yast
5. SUSEgreeter - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated. (Might be derived from something else as I see it in my working folder but not in github)
6. xfce splash - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated, or treated the same way as the application splash screens below. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/xfce
7. If we're not going to keep -opensuse branding as an option then removal of the gimp parts of the opensuse-Branding package and the build process in https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and removal of the libreoffice-opensuse branding package from Factory
I don't know does this also include kdelibs branding, but i think that at least that *should* be branded, new 4.10 artwork looks... ahhh.. rather vivid.
8. Removal of the variable GNOME wallpaper from https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and appropriate changes made to the openSUSE-branding packages so GNOME has the same static default wallpaper as KDE
Medium Priority - Less important, but still needs to be looked at
1. Improvements to the grow design https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3
2. Tweaking of everything accomplished already and everything above once it's done to make this version of openSUSE as pretty as possible https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3
3. GDM - GNOME 3's GDM is pretty much taken care of (by me) and is currently just a simple white logo ontop of the default grey+noise wallpaper every other GNOME 3 installation has - I think it actually works pretty well with our current draft of grow, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon if people come up with ideas. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=gdm-branding-openSUSE&proje ct=openSUSE%3AFactory
4. Packaging of alternative/additional wallpapers/designs and submission to openSUSE Factory. http://build.opensuse.org
5. Testing and contributing to Michaels awesome adwaitia green theme for gnome 3 and tweaking any branding to better match http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-gnome/2012-12/msg00044.html https://github.com/Catanzaro/gnome-themes-suse/
Low Priority - Probably too late to do for 12.3 but if we want it for 12.4 people probably need to start work on it now
1. If people really want to use Raster artwork as an option for core design artwork, an alternative branding makefile script to at least replicate the current functionality of the branding makefile script here will need to be made https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile

I had a look at this and to be very honest, I was kinda shocked to see this. To me it seems as if we have been trying to put as much as possible in a box. Either the box is too small or we are trying to put too much in there. This KDM screen doesn't fit with all the other artwork. It would be really a shame if we leave this in the distro. Can we have a look at the theme of the lightdm-kde-greeter and create something similar for KDM ? In other words, Lets remove the box and make separate components. One component where you can select the user, the second component for the userid and password and the third component for the shutdown, reboot, etc components. In my opinion the third component should be at the bottom of the screen. The second component can be placed inside a smaller box and should be in the middle of the screen. The first component with the user selection, is either just above the second component or to the right. Definitely a smaller font has to be chosen.
KSplash:

I personally like the compact design. But you can always come up with a proposal (in form of art and code, not text). IMO that is way to go for the KDM branding. I'll try to experiment in the next days with mentioned or similar setup. @Marcus I didn't feel Raymond's tone was bad, it is just that the screen itself looks too cluttered, especially with > 1 users, and also especially if username doesn't fit the dimensions used for pictures (which i am also considering changing, as those one used here are really off with this design). Being left-footed and right-handed with *no* artistic talents, I must agree. I first saw the new sign-on screen yesterday and was astonished. Appreciating the donated efforts of the artistic group, I firmly believe this screen must be rethought, text overlaps the outline and the box is quite full and cluttered looking on my 16x10 24" display.

From what I've seen in the source, I've a doubt about the place and how it goes when a domain is enable.
Also it would be good for the shake, to have print-screen of it, with a long list of users (like >8) with real name and picture associated like it happen in reality. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Yes and no. A standardized slide presentation template for use at all times would definitely be good. But there is also the need for a theme-based template that incorporates the artwork around release time. During this general period, of about 1 month prior and 1 month after release date, there's an increased amount of presenting out there by Ambassadors specifically to promote the release. Having the artwork in the background makes for a very good presentation design. Countdown banner, we agree. :-) Web banners, essentially are an offshoot of the countdown banners, and used in places where the countdown banner will not work. (For example, You cannot post the countdown banner on Facebook.) Web banners are also useful for promoting catch phrases that the marketing team might be developing to promote that particular release. Those catch phrases really can't be incorporated into Countdown because it would just be too cluttered. Hi All,
I was debating posting on the thread about regular meetings - Marcus and Bryen have successfully conveyed my feelings on the topic, but I do accept there is one thing that could be improved upon to help people contribute.
High Priority - The following tasks are essential and must be completed as soon as possible for 12.3 to be a successful release
1. Do we still need splashed branded for people who might not be using plymouth? if so, this needs to be done too! https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/splashy
I do not know how to package or get sources ready for this particular package but I am working on a design mockup for it taking influences from the grow design. (Posting soon)
6. xfce splash - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated, or treated the same way as the application splash screens below. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/xfce
7. If we're not going to keep -opensuse branding as an option then removal of the gimp parts of the opensuse-Branding package and the build process in https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and removal of the libreoffice-opensuse branding package from Factory
Currently tweaking the grow wallpaper for design proposal. (Posting soon)
2. Tweaking of everything accomplished already and everything above once it's done to make this version of openSUSE as pretty as possible https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3
3. GDM - GNOME 3's GDM is pretty much taken care of (by me) and is currently just a simple white logo ontop of the default grey+noise wallpaper every other GNOME 3 installation has - I think it actually works pretty well with our current draft of grow, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon if people come up with ideas. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=gdm-branding-openSUSE&project=openSUSE%3AFactory

Greeter is a simple program that you can start with 'SUSEgreeter'. Configuration and files are in /usr/share/kde4/apps/SUSEgreeter . Fast play (after long research) led to: http://paste.opensuse.org/29614857 This is just to show what is possible without large effort: * background.png light color was changed to black, * greet_section.html got all #FFFFFF instead of #000000 for text color, * blueprint.png has more contrast, * cr64-suse.png has only inverted color; a bit of 3D would be better, * button_cancel.png got red instead of gray; it is too simple. There are some variables in .html files in greeter configuration directory that I have no idea how to change as I still have no sources for 'SUSEgreeter' binary. Searching for sources was actually majority time spent on greeter. Next is: * to polish result, which I see as artwork task; backround.png should be rounded (for instance), suse icon cr-64-suse.png should be shinier. * figure out how one goes from Github to files, which I take on myself, * see how configurable is greeter, * see for some glitches in image what they are; light green vertical line top left and black line on top of background.png . They don't exist in original PNG file, but appear when greeter is running. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Now with more then 5 minutes on hands, I looked at: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=kdebase4-openSUSE&project=KDE%3ADistro%3AFactory kdebase4-openSUSE.spec file and it is producing among other things kdebase4-workspace-branding-openSUSE which is the one that I've seen in YaST as container for SUSEgreeter. Also: I can see a small design problem if greeter is dark background on dark default wallpaper with no edges, gradient bevel, shadow or whatever will be suitable to create a frame like light area. Tomorrow I'll have more time to try some options and give more info about greeter behavior, so that people with more artistic feeling can jump in and make a decision. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

In the meantime I looked at KDE SUSEgreeter, and I'm not sure that there will be any solution in so short time, besides modified background.png . The last problem I found out yesterday is that http links are dark blue, most likely inherited from KDE and, that the Qt settings that are much more acceptable even as default values are ignored. In other words without help of someone that can fix SUSEgreeter binary, we will have to use background that has a good contrast to dark blue links. Another problem is that my changes to make text readable with dark background include files that belong to another package, in another repo, which makes a game more interesting. Principles are the same, just more work to get it published. In other words, you can experiment by changing /usr/share/kde4/apps/SUSEgreeter/backgound.png with all other files in tact. That is the only file that belongs to branding, all other are part of kdebase4-workspace-branding-openSUSE. Size of image is 800x600 px, as that is fixed size of greeter. To be on a safe side the better option is to use parts of branding.svg in github repo, and change them to your liking. I still don't understand what I see when I open that .svg. It is most likely to satisfy some script that wants to resize .svg to 800x600 .png. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

I did some work too, that still needs more polish. I like rounded corners, but I'm afraid that icons going out of allotted space is not a good idea. If those changes in kdebase-opensuse will correct that then good, but if what I see is what users of 12.3 will see it has to be fixed. Also, I did changes to icons and moved KDE section from footer. KDE section in the footer is some rushed patch, that no one fixed later. My main problem was that links inherit KDE theme settings, which makes them dark and not easily readable. That is the reason to introduce light gray background like in: http://paste.opensuse.org/61811356 but now I have to find xml and html files that change that KDE thing, before I can post another screenshot. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

OK. I added fix in greeter/greetings.cpp . Version for software search in line 184 was pointing to 12.1. It is just in case that I have no chance to fix that later. Actually, both lines that replace URL should go out as xml/html should not have a wrong link in a first place, but lines can be workaround for some bug.

Agree on previous design and I can accept the idea to let icons stick out of the frame, but that should be perceived by users as intention. - in other words half the icon out - is design, just a bit of it - will make different impression.
Also, I did changes to icons and moved KDE section from footer. KDE section in the footer is some rushed patch, that no one fixed later. Are those on the screenshot? Didn't noticed them
No, I have to create them again. I have master file so is just a matter of copy paste proper sections.

Actually, both lines that replace URL should go out as xml/html should not have a wrong link in a first place, but lines can be workaround for some bug. Cool, though not needed as that is taken care of in spec file:
#Make the Link to the software search from the greeter default to to the correct version of openSUSE (bnc#681131) sed -i s/12.1/%{version}/ greeter/greetings.cpp This also automagically adapts to the oS version package is built on

Great. It is probably not possible to make all that more complicated. Version is again 12.1, so spec file will not complain.

Hi All,
I was debating posting on the thread about regular meetings - Marcus and Bryen have successfully conveyed my feelings on the topic, but I do accept there is one thing that could be improved upon to help people contribute.
High Priority - The following tasks are essential and must be completed as soon as possible for 12.3 to be a successful release
1. Do we still need splashed branded for people who might not be using plymouth? if so, this needs to be done too! https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/splashy Small ping :-) We will soon enter the freeze, and beta will also be soon, so i'm asking did anyone had a look at this?

Small pong :) I told before that I will look at plymouth, but as usually with tight times before freeze I'm most likely in a position to choose to learn about publishing process, or to learn about plymouth. In either case there will be nothing online, or on time, unless I can use good will of someone that can publish to github. Plymouth would need another script to tell users that computer runs. I'm sure I can find some, but, it will come later. I did not even start to experiment with some other scripts as SUSEgreeter dirty technical details where my focus last few days, so whoever has time can jump in. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Oki, i just wanted to know is there anyone working on it (didn't want to imply you should do it). I am worried about it cause that is the first thing the user sees after grub screen, and it would be really off with the new branding currently in Factory. Or, in other words, i agree with Richard in that he placed plymouth as #1 TODO

I mentioned me as I actually said, I will do it, but fiddling with greeter took some time, and I'm not done yet.
