Hi All, I just got a new box, AMD Athlon 64 2800+, and installed SuSE 9.1 on it. I'm coming from an old PII 450mhz machine where I was also running 9.1 for the past month (I'm a very recent Linux user). On the 32 bit machine, it was relatively easy to get Xine to work with DVDs, just visit packman's site and download the correct RPMs and install them. With this new 64 bit machine, no such luck. I've looked thru this lists archive back to May and noted several references to compiling from source, and other references to using the 32 bit version. The existing posts I found all assume a level of knowledge that I haven't come anywhere close to achieving yet. So, my questions. 1) Is it possible to get DVD's to play on the AMD64? 32 bit or 64 bit player, either one. 2) If so, is there a source somewhere with step by step instructions on how to accomplish that? Instructions geared to a complete newbie... Scott -- POPFile, the OpenSource EMail Classifier http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ Linux 2.6.5-7.95-default x86_64

Yes. 64 bit. I use Kaffeine in preference to xine, though.

Instructions for xine-lib 1. Download xine-lib source from http://sourceforge.net/projects/xine/. I used xine-lib-1-rc3c. I also tried xine-lib-1-rc4a, but it had an assembler bug, which has apparently been fixed in xine-lib-1-rc5. 2. Unpack source to a build directory. 3. In the build directory, run ./configure --enable-libsuffix=64 --prefix=/opt/kde3 4. Then run make 5. Then run make install and you are done. I can send you my config.log, make.out and make-install.out if you want to see the details.

Thanks, I really appreciate the step by step instructions. Unfortunately, the make dies, complaining about a missing 'libpopt.la' file in /usr/lib64 module-2.0 -ldl -lglib-2.0 ../../src/xine-engine/libxine.la grep: /usr/lib64/libpopt.la: No such file or directory /bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib64/libpopt.la: No such file or directory libtool-nofpic: link: `/usr/lib64/libpopt.la' is not a valid libtool archive make[4]: *** [xineplug_inp_gnome_vfs.la] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory `/home/helphand/Documents/xine/xine-lib-1-rc5/src/input' make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/helphand/Documents/xine/xine-lib-1-rc5/src/input' make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/helphand/Documents/xine/xine-lib-1-rc5/src' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/helphand/Documents/xine/xine-lib-1-rc5' make: *** [all] Error 2 The lib64 directory does have libpopt.so but no .la helphand:/usr/lib64 # ls -la libpop* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2004-07-03 15:24 libpopt.so.0 -> libpopt.so.0.0.0 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 38771 2004-04-25 10:19 libpopt.so.0.0.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2004-07-03 14:46 libpopt.so.1 -> libpopt.so.1.0.0 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 38771 2004-04-25 10:19 libpopt.so.1.0.0 I have no clue what it all means..... Well, solved. Some googling determined that Suse doesn't include libpopt.la in the popt.rpm for some strange reason. This is probably not the right way to deal with that, but I located a libpopt.la file on the web, downloaded it to /usr/lib64 and then changed the library path in it to /usr/lib64. Amazingly, it worked. The subsequent make and make install of xine-lib-1-rc3c went fine and Kaffeine now happily plays my DVD's. A big thanks to Paul Leopardi for the pointers! That libfurgle.la file is missing while libfurgel.so exists is a sign that you have installed furgle.rpm but have not installed furgle-devel.rpm. Many SuSE packages come in pairs like this. Examples are glibc and glibc-devel, libmng and libmng-devel, libogg and libogg-devel, libpng and libpng-devel, ncurses and ncurses-devel. In this case popt and popt-devel. You will find that popt-devel includes libpopt.la. See http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/prof/packages_amd64/popt-... See, eg. http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/suse/x86_64/update/9.1/rpm/x86_64/ for the current patched popt and popt-devel rpms.

Ahh, got it. Thank you for the explanation, I had no idea that the .la files were related to devel packages. That tidbit should come in real useful. Again, I really appreciate your help, it's wonderful to finally be able to play my DVD's!
