Again I needed to reload openSuSE 11.4 because a NET load of 12.1 failed to boot. What failed was Desktop however, failsafe would boot. I think it was a option in /boot/grub/menu.lst that this unit did not like. Now I have 11.4 up again and it works ok, but it has NO hostname in a login screen or uname -a . Yet /etc/HOSTNAME is set and /etc/hosts is correct and all entries in it can be reached with ping. Yast2 was checked for a Hostname and it was correct. All logins show "(none)" and so does "/bin/hostname". [opensuse-factory] Clickpad regression in Tumbleweed kernel

Hi, With the standard 11.4 kernal the touchpad on my hp dmz1 worked perfectly, but the upgrade to the 2.6.39-30 kernal in Tumbleweed breaks it. I lose right click and click + drag functionality. There are quite a few reports around the net of problems with this trackpad (e.g., http://bigbrovar.aoizora.org/index.php/2011/05/24/better-clickpad-support-f…), but it worked great out of the box with openSUSE 11.4. Maybe there is some patch that did not get applied to the kernel in Tumbleweed? The only openSUSE bug report I could find that looks related is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=661427. hello, When I use gnome fallback I have no problem with the mouse and keyboard. I installed Gnome-shell and both are not responding anymore, When I installed Gnome-shell with all the plugin I see these message : There is a problem the system cannot repair. [opensuse-factory] booting with systemd - hardly any console output?

I've just done a fresh install of factory to see how systemd behaves. At first I ran with init=/bin/systemd configured in lilo.conf. With this I get hardly any console output? After an fsck of the /home volume, nothing happens until I get the login prompt. Is intentional? Then I tried just adding init=/bin/systemd at the lilo prompt, and now I got a lot more of the usual output, although it seems to be a bit garbled. Hello, Can the timings for factory-publish be shortned any ? The reason I ask is because of the time lag beteen factory-publish's ? Latest date of files of files published[1]: 02-Jun-2011 Todays date: 07-Jun-2011 5 days seems a long time between factory publish's. - Could the publish be refreshed say 2 times a week ? - Could the factory publish/refresh be automated somehow e.g via a crontab and script to do the job putting out new updates/removing old files/refreshing metadata ? Hi, Working on OpenNebula. The upstream source provides a script to start a daemon. With a couple of patches I turned the script into an init script that keeps rpmlint quiet. In the package I put the patched script into /etc/init.d. The problem I now have is that I do not want to run the daemon as root. The implication would be that root would have to have password less login enabled on all nodes that are part of the cloud. Is there a way to run the daemon as a specific user? The package also creates a user account for the cloud administrator and the daemon should run as this user. Should I try something like "sudo -u USERNAME PATH_TO_DAEMON" in the init script or are there better/other ways to get his done. The user does not have a password, thus the account cannot login interactively. Help is appreciated. peer-io.c: In function ‘tr_evbuffer_write’: peer-io.c:285:31: error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type make[1]: *** [peer-io.o] Error 1 --- This one REALLY has me curious as to how it was build for the distribution, since I have been unable to build transmission from their source repo for some time due to something along the lines of (if not the exact same) error I'm getting from the 11.4 package. I have a system that seems to be fully updated to 11.4, and installed the appropriate build-requires. Yet another rpmbuild -bb fails with errors indicating it never should have been buildable to a binary in the first place. As there is no strict rule or exact step-by-step way to decide if a package should be dropped, the "policy" described there is rather fuzzy. [opensuse-factory] devel project for computer forensic apps?

All, I'm hoping to push a computer forensic app called "log2timeline" to a devel repo soon. And then to factory, possibly. (it is still fairly young, so putting it in a stable repo may be pointless.) There are a number of other computer forensic apps on OBS, but mostly spread around in various peoples home projects. (I'd say I found at least 20 packages related to computer forensics in my casual looking on OBS) For those that don't know "forensics" is the application of science to the legal world. So one could argue these apps should just be added to the science project, but I don't think its really a good fit. science:forensics would be my preference, but it doesn't exist (yet). Can anyone recommend where I should SR my package to? Should I file a bugzilla to create science:forensics? Right, I had openjdk installed but I had an application that required Sun java which I installed using zypper. Next I tried using update-alternatives, no worky. Read and re-read the manpage which is very wordy but leaves me clueless. I googled and eventually stumbled upon "update-alternatives --all" which offered options that allowed me to select java-1_6_0-sun, but javac was still pointing to openjdk. "zypper in java-1_6_0-sun-devel" and automatically it righted everything. Over the years I've found update-alternatives to be very confusing and I wish the manpage at least had a few useful examples. I think I'll have to find the maintainer and make suggestions as until now I've not had any luck reading the manpage and making SWAGs (Scientific Wild Ass Guesses - Trademark -- Amdahl Corporation). Hello, Which filesystems in opensuse 11.4 and later will handle these requirements ? 1. -larger disk volumes i.e in the 2 to 3 Terabyte range. 2. -lots of files on the disk > 150,000+ 3. -will handle a system restart when system stops responding [restart with a power off/on] 4. -have a journalled file system recovery to ensure filesystem and files are in a healthy state after a system freeze/reboot ? What file systems does the build service use to handle the volumes of data and load ? The normal bootscreen came, but then the console said the following: FIBMAP: Invalid argument FIBMAP: Invalid argument (so on.....) then the normal log-in came: Welcome to openSUSE 12.1 "Asparagus" Milestone 1 - Kernel 2.6.39-2-default (tty1). linux-bqgy login: Anyone get the same? I´m downloading the M1 DVD now and will install the LXDE version on my notebook. Shall I open a bug report? I searched the openSUSE 12.1 section with the keyword KDE and didn´t find such bug. [opensuse-factory] SSD detection when creating first time fstab ?

Hi, The setup process of opensuse creates a /etc/fstab according to partition settings on the SSD/hard drive. However there is no detection of the type (ie SSD or hard drive) during this process. I discovered that the TRIM functionnality was not supported by default on ext4 file system. TRIM aims at extending duration of SSD by delaying some write/delete operations ; besides it improves performance of SSD. To get TRIM support on ext4, the partition must be mounted with the "discard" option in /etc/fstab. Would it be possible for 12.1 to make the detection script able to spot a SSD and add this option at the setup step of openSUSE installation ? I think that SSD users are not always aware that they need to tweak their /etc/fstab to preserve their drive... I have no idea if TRIM support can be retrieved from SSD information at the kernel level. Helloo, On my usual factory install, I used to be able to start anything from kdm or gdm, but Kde. Today it's exactly the contrary. This may be slightly off-topic for this forum, but I wanted to hear what the Suse experts have to say. We are are a research non-profit with about 2500 staff (300-400 part time Unix users and 100 hardcore Linux users) and about 500 openSUSE and some SLES and CentOS boxes ( 50 Desktops, 100 servers and a compute cluster with 350 boxes) Our goal has always been to create a unified environment which enables researchers to use their NFS mounted home directory from everywhere and most of our systems are at openSUSE 11.2 or 11.3. In general we really like Suse and have only 3 gripes: SLES is too different from openSUSE (only small number of packages) KDE support for encrypted wifi is insufficient (Gnome is only slighly better) package names change too frequently (but I don't know that any other Linux distro is doing a better job here) I wanted to add that the infrastructure IT people i our organization moved to CentOS after they found the package manager to be unworkable in 10.1. (We found it pretty hard to swallow, too ....but we kept going with Suse) We are now starting to re-design our HPC cluster and one of the questions that came up is which Linux distro we should use in the future. We also need to upgrade our desktop Linux desktops so this seems to be a good time to take a deep breath and re-think what we are doing. We only considered openSUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora and CentOS. We quickly ditched CentOS for being always being too outdated and Fedora for being too bleeding edge. This leaves us with Ubuntu and openSUSE. after a few days of research our group came up with this list and we are still working on it. Please correct Advantage openSUSE --------------------------------- * YaST administration tool centralizes and simplifies configuration and administration. * As a team, we have much more experience supporting openSUSE. We have deployment tools, software repositories, and rescue tools for openSUSE and have experience building rpm packages (e.g. using the openSUSE build service) * Would have no migration costs to different Linux OS (~$50k - $100k for migration of 100+ Linux Systems to Ubuntu) * 8-month release cycle indicates openSUSE focuses more on stability * Single edition of openSUSE supports both servers and desktops, KDE and Gnome. (KDE in openSUSE is better supported than kubuntu) * openSUSE is a Tier 1 distribution that can get bugfixes faster upstream to the kernel developers (Ubuntu reports bugs to Debian which reports them to the Linux kernel developers) Advantage Ubuntu -------------------------- * About 3x more binary packages are available for Ubuntu, including scientific applications. * Ubuntu is hardware-certified for more Laptops we use. (Gnome and Unity have better support for ‘encrypted wifi’) * Enterprise "Long Term Support" (LTS) version is actually the standard disto with longer support cycles and is free (gets maintenance updates for 3 years on the desktop version and 5 years on the server version / Suse SLES subscription $350/year) * 6-month release cycle indicates that Ubuntu focuses more on keeping software up-to-date. * Ubuntu has a larger user community worldwide which is able to produce more documentation * better supported in cloud environments (EC2 AMIs, etc) * better supported with configuration management tools like puppet or chef. Obviously some of the advantages are highly tailored to our organization. I would be interested to hear what other advantages we might find regarding openSUSE. Hi Greg, libqt4-doc-devel and libqt4-sql-plugins should point to libqt4 sources in Tumbleweed, not in KDE:Qt. Otherwise they can get out of sync (the fixed libqt4-doc-devel/sql-plugins links from TW to KDE:Qt still point to the latest liqt4 sources in KDE:Qt, not fixed ones). I've fixed it for now. Hello, I activated tumbleweed repository on a 64bit 11.4 fresh installation and after a couple of weeks of using it, it started it the popup this warning when installing or updating software with YaST : "nothing provides libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.15)(64bit) needed by kdebase4-runtime-4.6.8-7.5.x86_64" Perhaps some package needs recompile ? The new Opensuse 12.1, will have the adsl packages with the first install enabled? The last weekend I installed opensuse 11.4 in the PC of a friend and I made the necessary updates in my house. When it wanted to connect to internet at his home, using an ADSL connection, it was found that he could not connect, because the adsl connection was not configured. I explained it how to configure the connection by phone, but it was not possible, because Yast needed to install the packages smpppd, and linux-atm-lib, and later the utility kinternet or qinternet. Yesterday I got to his home, and I must to download the packages executing firefox in windows, but with surprise, I could not find the package linux-atm-lib. I probed ther fisrt time with the package linux-atm, but this package required the atmlib package, and I must to reboot in windows to download it and install it in Opensuse, but it not worked, when I tried to make the adsl configuration in Yast, because the linux-atm-lib package was not present, Yast has not saved the configuration, and so on. You have no idea how annoying it is having to reboot 5 times and use windows to solve the problems opensuse, because I must to reboot in windows and Opensuse about five times in both system, and made the adsl configuration five times. At last, because I hatte no way to find the linux-atm-lib package for Opensuse 11.4, I probed to download and install the linux-atm-lib package for Opensuse 11.3, and it worked. All, I just noticed that 32-bit libpcap appears to be missing from the factory-snapshot (or at least one of builds is complaining about it missing). But looking at http://software.opensuse.org it seems to be fine. (I clicked through to the repo, and it shows a successful 32-bit build). How can I confirm that it really is fine in factory, but missing from the snapshot? (I have a small perl module I want to submit to factory, but I assume I need it to be building before I submit it.) I've filed bnc#696826 about 11.4's lv2core-devel's lv2config being unable to function due to a lack of package python-redland. [opensuse-factory] new openSUSE:* source processing method. PLEASE TEST !

Hello, I look for some more people who want to try our hopefully soon to be applied new source processing method for openSUSE:Factory and the maintenance updates to :Update projects. It should work good already, so you do not need to be brave ;) You may know that currently all package source submissions to Factory and friends get SUSE in-house be reviewed, re-validated and reformated. You can see this in the additional "autobuild" commits in the openSUSE:Factory commits. We plan to do following changes in future: * We would like to do these steps out there and as soon as possible in future. This means in best case before any packager is commiting his changes the validating and reformating is done already. This avoids any possible merge problems, unnecessary commits and extra turn around times. * these services can be code stream specific (unlike current osc_source_validator). That means we will be able to do better checks in future for Factory then for maintenance updates (where we need to stay compatible). And we do not need to take care about non-SUSE code streams, eg. Fedora or MeeGo people can still work and submit their changes to their projects or write their own services. * In addition to existing checks, we want to track where upstream sources (tar balls) are comming from. So far we had the download_url source service, which downloaded files and stored them with _service: prefix what not everybody liked. The new and project wide working "download_files" service is just validate the URL's from the spec file. The new osc will commit these files as usual files and the server is just validating this. (People with low upstream bandwidth can still decide to skip the commit, the server will store it with prefix again.) So, if everybody is using this current osc & source service stack, the source services will be used to do these steps, but there will be no _service* file(s) in your package sources. And the last really SUSE in-house part of Factory development would be the legal review db, really everything else would be out there in build.o.o... How to test this ? ================== First of all you need the new services and a new osc installed. Please add the proper openSUSE:Tools project repo and install zypper in obs-service-download_files obs-service-format_spec_file obs-service-source_validator In addition to that please install "osc" from openSUSE:Tools:Unstable project. If you do not like to add the repo, just run osc getbinaries openSUSE:Tools:Unstable osc $YOUR_REPO $YOUR_ARCH and install the osc package manually. To activate this for your entire devel project (it would work also per package) do # osc co $YOUR_DEVEL_PROJECT _project # cd $YOUR_DEVEL_PROJECT/_project # cat > _service <<EOF <services> <service name="format_spec_file" mode="trylocal"/> <service name="download_files" mode="trylocal"/> <service name="source_validator" mode="trylocal"/> </services> EOF # osc addremove # osc ci -m "activate factory default source services" Afterwards these services running on "osc build" and "osc commit" actions, if not disabled via CLI switch. Reformated spec files will be uploaded directly and in case of validation errors, osc will abort before commit/build'ing. What happens to people with old osc version (0.130 and before) or just using the webui after activating these services ? Nothing. The services will run on the server only. => The source state will turn into "broken" if a validation error exists. => if tar ball is missing/different or spec file is different formated they will be visible with _service:* prefix again. How to get rid of them again ? Just anyone with a current osc stack will merge these changes automatically on next commit and the server side generated files will disappear again. If this testing phase works out fine, we will of course make a maintenance update for all these packages, so everybody should have a current stack. I have activated this already for the openSUSE:Tools* projects and everything seems to work. And I found out that 3 out of 3 random packages from openSUSE:Factory contain broken Source: $URL lines ;) Feel free to branch any openSUSE:Tools package into your branch and try to edit it. I've submitted the updated version of Banshee (2.0.1) to Factory today and also banshee-community-extensions (which wasn't a part of Factory). [opensuse-factory] Recursive login - 12.1 M1

I just downloaded the Factory KDE LiveCD (which contains 12.1 M1), and I can't log in. I haven't even installed it yet, but when I press enter to login, the screen flashes and I get the login screen again. I also *did* do a seperate install from the NET iso and I get the same issue. [opensuse-factory] Releasing Milestone 1

Hi, Whatever is now in Factory will be Milestone 1 even though the final images are still building. There are quite some ugly bugs in it, but it's testable software and we have a complete set of ISOs. There is quite a lot of difference against 11.4, I tried to produce the diff out of the wiki and I found 819 version updates - including packages with so small names like rpm, perl or gcc, but also with long names like kernel-source and gnome-shell. I hope you can make use out of it, be warned though: it's only a starting point for further development, not perfectly stable. Greetings, Stephan

Hello, Is this a known Problem ? I update today my server SLES 11 SP1 with the new XEN Packages after this it is not possible to boot ? The mkinitrd don't write the correct menu.lst , on boot the xen......gz is not found ? I have a second Problem after reboot my extra boot Partition is no more found on a Raid1 System?
