Matthias,
Finally! We know which patch killed the radeonhd driver for the RS690M
cards. The last good/bad drivers are:
Last Good Commit: 7/21/09 de3f80bc6ec2a 1.2.5
First Bad Commit: 7/21/09 2e2e4d118e497 1.2.5
I am running on the de3f80bc6ec2a commit right now and it is working
fine. If I compile the 2e2e4d118e497 package -- WHAM, the driver is
dead-as-a-door-nail -- nothing but dead screen.
I found it, now you gotta fix it :-)
All of the Xorg.[01].log[.old] files can be found:
http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/radeonhd/crash/xorg-log4/
Let me know what else to send. Man that took a while. Especially not
knowing git bisect. I finally gave up on having git bisect "next"
whatever step through the commits. I just had Lynx open in tty1 to the
git repository, and just copied the commit number to 'git bisect start
"lotsofnumbers" 1.2.5' and kept bracketing good/bad commits and finally
got there.
Let me know what else I can send so you guys can get the driver
repaired. It was kind of fun, thanks.
Here's what's funny about the log files you've posted:
The .old file (from commit e3f80bc6ec2a - which is apparently working)
contains the line:
(EE) RADEONHD(0): RHDCSStop: Command Submission backend is not active!
This should not happen!
The other log file doesn't - as it seems to lock up before.
Still, the change made in commit 2e2e4d118e497 is very small and should
be straight forward. I fail to see why this would cause any problems.
Therefore I suspect a memory corruption somewhere else.
This change should not even matter for you this code is not executed on
RS690 - it is for R600 and later.
Cheers,
Egbert.
Wow,
I get what you are saying, but regardless of whether the changes in that
commit "should" matter, the "do" matter and "do" break the driver completely
for the RS690M cards. The question is "What will it take to fix it?"
The card at issue is in a Toshiba 205D laptop. Here is all the card
information I can find (I'm running fglrx at the moment):

Hopefully some of the memory information above may help of find out what is
dying with that commit. Thanks.
