This has come up before. Is anyone actually now working on or planning to work on the RS600 support? Rafi Alex Deucher wrote:

In the Xorg.0.log (Ubuntu) I get the following error: (II) RADEONHD(0): Found libdri 5.4.0. drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:05.0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns -1 ... # lots of similar lines ... (EE) RADEONHD(0): RHDDRIVersionCheck: drmOpen("radeon", "pci:0000:01:05.0") failed. (WW) RADEONHD(0): RHDDRIPreInit: Version check failed. Disabling DRI.
There is no difference between Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (radeonhd from git, 64 bits) and Jaunty Jackalope (32 bits).
I also tested openSuse 11.1 (64 bits) and DRI is not working, but the error reported in the log is different: (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
Your card is not an RS690, it's an RS600. the RS690 is supported, the RS600 is not. The RS600 uses a different gart interface that isn't yet supported in the drm.
