For me this groups A:1 together, something we certainly don't want to indicate. But it's possible.

After considering multiple ways to separate single letters and numbers with single characters, I find they all look misleading in some way. I vote for stripping numbers when unnecessary and keeping the current slash format:
So we would get DVI-A(-1) instead of DVI-A_1 before DVI(-1) instead of DVI-D_1 before DVI(-1)/digital instead of DVI-I_1/digital before DVI(-1)/analog instead of DVI-I_1/analog before
