Just thought I'd mention, I installed Fedora 9 last week. With a
default xorg.conf using the radeonhd driver the external DVI monitor
still does not display. Manually entering a xorg.conf modeline and
then running xrandr --output DVD-D_1 --auto (like I was doing before
with Fedora 8) kicks the monitor on though.
$ rpm -q xorg-x11-server-Xorg
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.4.99.901-29.20080415.fc9.i386
$ rpm -q xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd
xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd-1.2.1-1.1.20080429git.fc9.i386
I'd love for this to work automagically one day. Let me know if I can help.

I'll wait for Fedora 9 which will hopefully ship with X Server 1.5. Till then I'll manually set the modeline as described earlier in the thread in my xorg.conf.
If that's ok for you, you're welcome. OTOH if it still occurs with 1.5, please come back to us, because then there's still a bug lurking somewhere. Also, if it just works(tm) with 1.5, a note would be appreciated :-)
