Thanks. The output shows that the table is ok now. And the two seemingly identical Saphire X1300 types are truly different beasts. Both have broken tables, so this is reassuring ;-)

Correct. Without restarting or 'xrandr --auto' nothing happens. We don't have true hot plug detection yet, there's no real infrastructure for that in the Xserver, though AFAIK it's coming.
It is possible (although I think unlikely) that this could also be due to the IOGEAR DVI KVM switch that I am using. The KVM switch occasionally Not really. If you had DDC problems, yes, but hot plug detection uses the same lines used for the RGB signal... I suspected that was the case, but I wanted to mention it anyway, as this wouldn't be the first time I spent hours trying to nail down a hardware issue only to discover that the problem was caused by a KVM all along.
