You need to download (about 25 Mbytes) "clear" standard kernel source
tarball from ftp://ftp.kernel.org ftp://ftp.kernel.org/ because Mandrake, RedHat, and other
vendors have deep patched kernels. So patch utility
can find appopriate line to substitute.
I tried this suggestion this weekend with Mandrake 9 and the kernel from the link above patched fine with no errors. I like it better because now it boots with the Penguin logo instead of the Mandrake. BUT, it refuses to write to CD-RW, giving permission errors. I tried as root, but to no avail. I guess it's because I'm using a USB CD-RW although it writes perfectly using cdrecord. Someone else on this list mentioned having the same problems with a USB CD-RW as well. I didn't create a new pktcdvd0 device, because after rebooting with the new kernel, there was already one there; pktcdvd so I used that one. Any other ideas? Shaun ^ . .
