Why? why not just use the automounter? If you use pam_mount, you'll need to make sure other ways to su/sudo/setuid to a different user would all be covered to mount what the userid "expects" to be there. Sounds very fragile.
You are quite correct ... ... and completely missing the point. I said "I'm playing around with". Not something to the effect that "I'm putting into production". One plays with stuff to learn how it works. It's an easy and pretty inconsequential PAM module that I can experiment with, then I go on to play/experiment with the next one. There are a lot of question about PAM, where the line goes in the sequence, what required/optional means and more. You are right about the "expects to be there". And it's an opportunity to learn a bit more about XML.
