check the value of DISPLAY before and after your "su - user", ..maybe.. forgot to re-EXPORT DISPLAY after you set it?
But you see, I don't /do/ anything either in the machine where "su -" gets DISPLAY set nor on the machine when it doesn't.
There have been multiple changes to 'su' over the various releases, - even to the point of changing where it came from.
I'm completely lost with PAM. I'll have to wait till others find what is different or wrong regarding pam in my machines - and I never touch it, unless there is some report here that says "do, because...". The settings are default as far as I know.
How the pam functions are called is another area of frequent changes. Could you check a few files between the systems? Most likely cause would be differences in /etc/pam.d/common-session
See if they are the same or diff, and if diff, what are diffs?
My best guess would be a difference in whether or not 'pam_env.so' is included, less likely might be some difference in the content of "/etc/security/pam_env.conf".
I think that on my virtual machines, all freshly installed, some work, some don't.
The difference is in the package lxdm, it calls X differently than lightdm. I switched to the second, problem solved. You can see how we found that out in other posts of these thread, specially from Andrei LXDE is sadly lacking, I have found several problems with it. I tried the desktop first in my small server/multimedia-server, to have an small desktop, and I had to go back to XFCE, too many things missing or wrong, I forget which. Recently I found a bug. Before reporting I tried on factory, and the package was not in OSS. Yes, it had the same bug. Tried to report bug from the "report bug" link in the OBS, and bugzilla failed with unknown assignees. All that is in emails in this and the factory mail list. They told me that LXDE had been intentionally removed from factory for lack of maintenance or something. Now this other bug. I hope to remember not to try LXDE again. Too much time lost tracking weird issues. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
