What is the procedure for creating an mdadm.conf file if I don't have one? How can I discover possible arrays and include them in mdadm.conf if the arrays are not running?
You could have googled that, but here it is:
mdadm --examine --scan >> /etc/mdadm.conf
Note that mdadm.conf is optional. I don't have one on my system. What you need is to enable mdadm in grub. I'm not too sure of the details off the top of my head, but iirc you want "domdadm" on the linux boot line, and you need mdadm support in grub. Otherwise, you may need to get the command "mdadm --assemble --scan" to run on every boot. Take a look at the raid wiki - it tells you how to set up a system manually.
