One of my biggest gripes with openSUSE is not putting non-memorable config bits that ought to be part of every decent backup plan into /etc/ somewhere, like Fedora does. I typically work around this by symlinking rather than trying to figure out where Fedora would have put it so as to override whatever controlling config is buried a bazillion layers deep in /usr/:
/etc/kde/config # ll . lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 Dec 26 2015 kdm -> ../../../opt/kde3/share . /etc/kde/config # rpmqa kdm kdebase3-kdm-3.5.10.1-325.1.x86_64
or simply edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and set DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_LOCAL="yes"
I seriously doubt installing vanilla 42.1 get him and kde3.
Methinks you missed the point of my post entirely. It was not about how to configure a greeter to enable root login. Rather, it was about user customized plain text config files not being properly placed in the monstrous /usr/ quagmire. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
