So, I created a new user and was able to login to the GUI desktop. While there, I was able to run the "Configure NVIDIA X Server settings" and get back a two screen display, so the nvidia graphics drivers *do* work with the installed 3.16.7-21-desktop kernel. I don't want to have to copy all of /home/old_user into /home/new_user (that's about 600GiB). Does anyone have a simpler suggestion, please?
