Is there write-up for how to get wordpress to run and allow themes to be installed in opensuse?

Wordpress is in the server:php:applications repo so I installed it.
I've hit 2 errors so far, and still can't install a theme:
- Issue one: mod_php5 not enabled
Solution: a2enmod mod_php5 (or can be done via yast)
That allows basic wordpress to run and new posts to be made. The first thing I tried after that was installing a theme.
- Error when trying to install a theme:
"There are no HTTP transports available which can complete the requested request."
Solution I used: zypper in php5_curl
- Exposes a second error when trying to install a theme:
=== Downloading install package from https://downloads.wordpress.org/theme/guardian.2.0.zip…
Unpacking the package…
Abort class-pclzip.php : Missing zlib extensions ===
I haven't found the fix for that yet, but I'm surprised to hit these issues trying to get a popular package to work.
Installing php5-zlib gets past the above, but when I actually "succeded" at installing the guardian theme, I broke my entire wordpress site:
http://wp.intelligentavatar.net/
This is definitely a R&D site, but still I hate to see it totally break.
fyi: I'm a wordpress newbie, but I hope it works better than this.

hi greg,
if your site totally breaks then apache error logs are your very best friend. not sure if you have defined an error log for your site? the default apache error log can be found at /var/log/apache2/ folder
hope this helps? & best of luck
greetings becki
I do have a dedicated error log for my wordpress site setup. After I installed the theme, I started getting this error: === [Fri Apr 10 00:28:19.819353 2015] [php5:error] [pid 13424] [client 108.6.51.107:55795] PHP Fatal error: Can't use function return value in write context in /srv/www/vhosts/wp.IntelligentAvatar.net/wp-content/themes/guardian/header.php on line 25, referer: http://wp.intelligentavatar.net/wp-admin/themes.php?activated=true === The rest of the error.log entries after that one are the same. I've got to go catch a plane this morning, so I haven't even tried to google the error message yet.
