Except it wasn't available on his 80386 computer for anything less than US $THOUSANDS. And his original purpose wasn't to recreate Unix, it was to explore the memory managememnt capabilities of the 80386. Creating a unix-like kernel was merely an avenue for accomplishing that goal.
