It could be that there simply isn't enough swap available to suspend to disk. I believe (I could be wrong) that suspend to disk tries to write to swap).
Thank you for your reply, John. I'm actually running the system for work right now (the 'other OS'.) I still have a few hours before I can try anything. My first instincts are to boot the install DVD to rescue mode and manually check the partitions; to also see if there's anything interesting in the logs.
