It might be an RS232 serial port, and thus require a serial to usb converter, too.

Same here. Funny, the shops I worked with, even in bulk, accepted "DB9" in our orders. Either they did the same mistake, or they did the "translation" silently. Which explains why many people think that DB9 is correct. Heh, I just did a quick search at a random shop (Maplin) for both, and the only hit was DB9!
