Why would that make a difference if everything works in 11.4
"Improvements" in later releases sometimes ask hardware to do things it hadn't done previously, or to a greater load than previously. See also my previous post's answer quoted above.

Did you try installing sysvinit-init in either 12.1 or 12.2?
Try a latest stable kernel (3.5.x) in 11.4 to see if it brings any of the same problems as you saw in 12.1/12.2.
