No, they're not. They use the same cabling and connectors but there it ends. That's why you can hook SATA drives to SAS host controllers but not the other way round as SATA controllers don't speak SCSI over serial lines.
Dell doesn't offer a SATA-only based workstation controller for their workstations or servers.
Of cause not. But if we're talking workstations and servers we're in a totally different market with vastly differing prices. Just look at what you pay for SAS drives or workstation graphics cards like ATI FireGL or NVidias Quattro. So it needs to be made explicit about what hardware we're speaking in order to avoid needless discussions.
