If I recall correctly, back in the early 1990s, when newsgroups were very active and the software had the ability to do so, one could actually delete a message and it would even get deleted from the recipient's computer PROVIDED that s/he had not saved it (as a backup for example). I seem to recall reading such a post but then finding that it was deleted almost in front of my eyes while I was still reading the newsgroup. But, of course, this was before google which is now storing everything it gets its hands on for hundreds of years...... and I don't think that that deleting a post is now possible as it was back "then".
