Those are simply different generations of the Intel 32 bit processors. As they advanced, they had more capability. An app written for i386, will run on i486 & later, but one written for a later generation may not run on an earlier one. As for the actual differences, you'd have to check the programmers reference manuals. One significant difference between i386 and i486 was the built in math processor.
