OK, so portmap was not running because that package wasn't installed on the server. I installed it, then ran into portmap[20840]: cannot bind udp: Address already in use type errors.
I managed to kill something that was using port 111 and both nfs and portmap are now running, but I still have the same problem.
You still have to mount the share manually on the client, and if it fails, look in the logs.
