It sounds like a sync issue. How are you sure that the alternative monitor you tried supports the configured refresh rate? I guess you are not.
Those 2 lines of your log look suspicious to me:
[ 34.463] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Using hsync ranges from config file [ 34.463] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Using vrefresh ranges from config file
I don't know what is in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but if the hsync and vrefresh values are out of range for your monitors you would see patterns on the screen as you report.
Since the install is rather new, there is no xorg.conf file, unless he created one himself after running into X trouble. OTOH, X would most likely be reading the original April 2010 /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf, which has values that should be close enough if they were on uncommented lines. He might have tried making changes there too.
Something that might help is to rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf if it exists, and/or to move the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ somewhere where they won't be found.
I second that. Actually I think that an xorg.conf file is no longer needed with the most recent drivers.
With most ATI, NVidia & Intel chips, no such file is needed for most people if their display has good EDID. Those with bad EDID or other chips, or needing customization, will still need either xorg.conf, or customizations of file(s) in xorg.conf.d/. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
