Guys, Following the latest updates, the gnome-settings-daemon segfaults when started in kde to support non-qt apps like firefox, mozilla, etc.. The gnome-settings-daemon (gsd hereafter) starts and functions fine under gnome, but for kde, this leaves any gtk apps looking horrible. After struggling to find a solution, at least I was able to identify the exact component (plugin) to gsd that causes the segfault. The 'xsettings' plugin is to blame. '/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/xsettings/active' Using gconf-editor I disabled each plugin one-by-one until gsd started without error. Unfortunately, since the xsettings plugin controls the font rendering, etc. for gtk apps, disabling it and starting gsd has no effect on the look of gtk apps in kde. Using '/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon --debug &' I captured the full debug output for the crash. The relevant part is: [1273786127,000,xklavier.c:xkl_engine_start_listen/] The backend does not require manual layout management - but it is provided by the application The error to the terminal was: [1273770918,000,xklavier.c:xkl_engine_start_listen/] The backend does not require manual layout management - but it is provided by the application (gnome-settings-daemon:28671): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed [1]+ Segmentation fault /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon I have tried reinstalling gsd and I have tried creating a new user and testing under that account and root. Same crash. The full backtrace is available here: (3.2k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/gnome/gsd-debug.txt.bz2 My stumbling block is I haven't a clue what feeds into the xsettings plugin getting started. I know the gnome-settings-daemon-2.22.1-24.1 provides: /usr/lib64/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/libxsettings.so but that hasn't changed 11.0 was released. So that isn't the problem. Finding what is causing the problem 'is' my problem. I'd gladly downgrade just to get thunderbird working under kde again if I could figure out what package is causing the blow-up. What say the gurus? Thanks for any help you can give with this. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
