List, This maybe an old trick but it's new to me in kde4 (and I suspect it is related to, and probably the reason behind, https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200935) I had a long configure string that I wanted to add a continuation character and new-line behind each configure parameter '\\\n' so I could use echo to split the string up by having each parameter on a single line. This exercise was necessary because you can't manipulate the new-line character in kate/kwrite in either plain-text or regular expressions search & replace expressions. Since each configuration parameter was enclosed with a single quote, I set my search to ' ' and my replace to ' \\\n' and hit replace all. To my pleasant surprise, This: configure '--prefix=/usr' '--datadir=/usr/share/php5' '-- mandir=/usr/share/man' '--bindir=/usr/bin' '--with-libdir=lib' '-- includedir=/usr/include' '--sysconfdir=/etc/php5/apache2' '--with-config-file- path=/etc/php5/apache2' '--with-config-file-scan-dir=/etc/php5/conf.d' '-- enable-libxml' '--enable-session' '--with-mm' '--with-pcre-regex=/usr' '-- enable-xml' '--enable-simplexml' '--enable-spl' '--enable-filter' '--disable- debug' '--enable-inline-optimization' '--disable-rpath' '--disable-static' '-- enable-shared' '--program-suffix=5' '--with-pic' '--with-gnu-ld' '--with- system-tzdata=/usr/share/zoneinfo' '--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs2' '--disable- all' '--disable-cli' became, this: configure '--prefix=/usr' \ '--datadir=/usr/share/php5' \ '--mandir=/usr/share/man' \ '--bindir=/usr/bin' \ '--with-libdir=lib' \ '--includedir=/usr/include' \ '--sysconfdir=/etc/php5/apache2' \ '--with-config-file-path=/etc/php5/apache2' \ '--with-config-file-scan-dir=/etc/php5/conf.d' \ '--enable-libxml' \ '--enable-session' \ '--with-mm' \ '--with-pcre-regex=/usr' \ '--enable-xml' \ '--enable-simplexml' \ '--enable-spl' \ '--enable-filter' \ '--disable-debug' \ '--enable-inline-optimization' \ '--disable-rpath' \ '--disable-static' \ '--enable-shared' \ '--program-suffix=5' \ '--with-pic' \ '--with-gnu-ld' \ '--with-system-tzdata=/usr/share/zoneinfo' \ '--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs2' \ '--disable-all' \ '--disable-cli' Pretty cool! Since you have always had the join feature in the editor, this means you can now manipulate the new-line character in kwrite/kate. (Now if they will just fix the snippets bug, kate/kwrite will be back to normal) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
