What I'm finding though is that it will work for a while and then the sound will disappear again. I'm having to do /etc/init.d/alsasound restart once or twice a day. Haven't been able to find out though what is causing it. /var/log/messages doesn't seem to have anything particularly interesting. I have un-installed pulseaudio though and that's helped a bit.
OK, I've tried uninstalling pulseaudio, but it's made no difference. In the Yast soundcard setup module, I can play a test sound, but in KDE 4.3 System Settings > Sound and Video Configuration, the test button reports that "SB Live 5.1 [SB0220] (ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback) does not work" so it definitely seems to be a KDE 4.3 problem.
