hi there, i am having some remote 9.1 and 10.0 systems, which need to be upgraded to 11.0 (with downloaded dvd iso image). some remote hand can insert the dvd and start the upgrade, only i need to prepare for some problems at http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_10.3 i found some severe bug with having separate var partition: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=270908 i wonder if the 11.0 dvd media still needs to have these requirements that one need to use other than device names for the partitions, preferably label or device-id stuff. also http://en.opensuse.org/How_To_Upgrade_System_with_Separate_/var_Partition says i should not set the label there in yast, but fails to explain where to set it instead exactly. when booting the old system and going into the yast fstab module i think i remember that it will complain if one tries to modify the label for partitions being currently in use and mounted. i wonder why. i suppose label for partitions on linux is not that simple and simply some directory entry such as in dos fat partitions. anyways, i can go for disk-id on the 10.0 system in its fstab, as the 10.0 system already has /dev/disk/by-id/ in that old 10.0 kernel. in there i have for example ata-ST340016A_serialhere-part6 -> ../../hda6 and hda6 is the partition for var /dev/hda6 on /var type reiserfs (rw,acl,user_xattr) i have checkd another working 11.0 system and there stuff in fstab looks like following: /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ExcelStor_Techn_.......-part6 /var ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 so i guess there was this change from ata (whatever involved libaries) to that sata or something subsystem of the kernel.org folks. so i probably need to change that first part of the fstab from the old 10.0 style with ata-ST3400.... to this newer scsi-SATA_ST3400.... stuff, right? so the 10.0 to 11.0 uprgade could probably work. only the 9.1 system doesnt have /dev/disk/.... at all... there are loads of old-style devices directly in /dev/..... nothing deeper. so i wonder if i will run into problems because of the separate /var/ on this 9.1 system. also i can only extract the model name of that hdd on 9.1 from /proc/ide/hda/model for example: ST3160021A i can ofcourse figure out what partition numbers fit to /var/ and so forth. only i dont know where to get the serial of that hdd exactly or if i can prepare fstab in 9.1 already before the final reboot into running the 11.0 dvd and construct that /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST3160021A.... myself properly :( any hints on this whole mess with the libata/pata/sata changes and this separate partition /var/ bug? also about this FATE mentioning, it seems like some additional bugzilla, or wishzilla or whatever? where do i find it? that one bug mentions:
------- Comment #9 From Lukas Ocilka 2008-06-26 05:00:28 MDT (-) ------- FATE #304979: Support Upgrade of System with separate /var partition
i dont seem to be able to find this fate business. any pointers? thanks. alaykum as-salam. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
