Isn't it possible to download the dependencies from the command line if I
want to? I can use yast no problems but was just curious.

use 'zypper source-install --build-deps-only foo'. Check also 'zypper
search -t srcpackage'

Two things you need for that:
1) a repository containing also the srcpackages
2) zypper 1.0.4 and above :O)
