Hi, I am trying to install 11.1 on a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop (used to run Win98 originally), and it is giving a problem. I have selected the bios to boot from cdrom, and then inserted the 11.1 dvd and rebooted. The boot goes to the grub menu previously loaded on the computer, and doesn't boot from the dvd.
An obvious question.(sorry).. is it a CD-drive and not a DVD drive? Does the laptop recognise the drive as a DVD drive? You could try to download a bootable Knoppix CD (if you have access to another machine) on another machine and the see if that loads on your laptop .
I have tried so far to change the hard drive, reflashed the bios, and changed the dvd drive. I still have the same problem, it won't boot from the dvd. The dvd has been properly burned, and I have tried booting from the 11.0 dvd that I used to install the present opensuse installation, as well as other dvd's of other distros that I know will boot for installation. I even tried to boot from gparted so I could format the hard drive, and it won't do that either.
This computer is pretty old, and I made it out of parts from two bad inspirons. Does anyone know of a fix for this, or is this one ready for the junkpile?
